Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 has got the Centre’s approval, as reported on Oct 26. It adds five new corridors covering 76.4 km, at a cost of ₹24,269 crore, with a target of 2029. Here is how it could improve connectivity across the city.
East to the Airport (Nagole to Shamshabad Airport, 36.8 km)
Nagole and LB Nagar
Mailardevpally and Aramghar
Shamshabad Airport
Reports say this longest line will be taken up first, giving the east of the city a direct metro link to the airport.
West and IT Belt (Raidurg to Kokapet/Neopolis, 11.6 km)
Raidurg and Hitec City
Gachibowli and the Financial District
Kokapet and Neopolis
This connects the IT hub, home to large offices like Microsoft, Google and Amazon, with the fast-growing residential areas nearby.
Old City (MGBS to Chandrayangutta, 7.5 km)
MGBS
Old City areas up to Chandrayangutta
This brings the metro deeper into one of the busiest parts of the city.
Northwest (Miyapur to Patancheru, 13.4 km)
Miyapur
Patancheru’s industrial and residential areas
This helps workers reach factories and manufacturing units without driving.
East Outskirts (LB Nagar to Hayathnagar, 7.1 km)
LB Nagar
Hayathnagar and nearby areas
On funding, the Centre will pay about 18%, Telangana about 30%, loans from international agencies about 48%, and PPP about 4%.
Note that this is not the full plan. Telangana had asked for 122.9 km across seven corridors. Land acquisition, final station locations and tenders are still in check The real impact will be clear once the formal order and construction schedule are out.
Which of these routes will help you the most? And what should the authorities focus on first: faster construction, feeder buses to stations, or fewer traffic diversions? What are your thoughts for the same?
